Tuesday April 5th, Chipping

Chipping Walk, Tuesday 5th April 2016

The day started with rain, with only 10 intrepid walkers braving the elements. However, by the start the rain had stopped and we set out past the old furniture factory. There  was a sign up saying they were hoping to get the funding to turn it into an hotel. At the reservoir we turned off towards Saddle Fell which was shrouded in mist, but that was OK because we weren’t going up there. We skirted the fell and then made our way east and then north across varied and undulating gritstone and limestone scenery. The sun soon came out and the weather stayed good for the rest of the day.

We stopped for lunch just beyond “Chicken George’s” (I don’t know who in West Lancs christened the farm that, but that’s how I’ve always known it!). We then headed back to Chipping via the impressive Knott Hill lime kiln and Leagram Hall.

The walk was fairly short, closer to 9 than 10 miles and we were back for 2 o’clock. There was a bit of up and down but no serious climbing and the going wasn’t too bad considering the recent rain. Anyway, it was nice to be out on what turned into a sunny spring day.
