The Walk.

Walk leaders - John Evenden and Ian Wardle.

Leaving the layby at New Bridge, 16 members headed into Sedbergh to start Stage 5. Ahead the prospect of 2 hours walking uphill, heading up Joss Lane past the car park to reach the rough track rising steeply above the beck. On the right just across a field the mound of Castlehow is prominent. At the foot of Winder, a track rises close to the edge of the deep ravine of Settlebeck Gill. This is followed to the ridge where the path leads to Calders. Just before the final push to the summit a short break allowed Julie to distribute cakes and announce Glyn’s birthday. From Calders the mist had lifted and the views opened up with the Trig of the Calf in the distance. Leaving the Calf we headed along the ridge to Hazelgill Knott, on the left the deep valley of Langdale and on the right the valley of Bowderdale.

Lunch was taken on West fell in brilliant sunshine with magnificent views (some of us were even in T-shirts!). On the descent to Newbiggin, Sunbiggin Tarn could be seen in the distance (that’s for next week). A short road walk kept us off the busy A685 on which we saw our coach pass by – we then found he was not at the finish. A quick call had him there in a few minutes. An excellent day I hope all enjoyed.

 John Evenden

Thanks John and Ian for leading the walk which I'm sure we all enjoyed. Also thanks to John for this report.
