Dales Highway stage 2

Dales High Way Stage 2                                                                                                                  10th March 2016

Once again we were blessed with a clear dry day as 15 members caught the 07:28 train from Settle to Skipton to start stage 2 of the Dales High Way. From the train station a half mile walk took us to where we finished the previous leg. After the customary group photo, off through the main town area crossing the Leeds & Liverpool canal to turn up Chapel Hill. Heading past the old chapel and Skipton Castle to the right. Then passing over Park Hill for the peak of Sharp Haw clearly seen to our left, once climbed a brief break was taken as we enjoyed a clear view of Pendle Hill across the Aire Valley. To the North east is Rough Haw and beyond that a prominent Cairn of Rylstone War Memorial on Barden Moor. Descending from Sharp Haw along one of many routes to Flasby, then along the banks of Flasby/Hetton Beck. Another break was taken at Hetton. Having avoided the £8 surcharge at the Angel Inn we crossed the moor heading for Winterburn Reservoir then Weets Top where lunch was taken. Our next stop was the limestone pavement on top of Malham Cove for a pre-arranged meeting with Stan and Shirley. Heading up Dry valley to Langscar Gate. Crossing Grizedales there was deep snow remaining in places, turning right at Nappa Gate along Stockdale lane past the, farm Rye Loaf Hill is prominent on the left. Leaving the lane the footpath took us past Attermire Cave and Warrendale Kotts where the track drops steeply towards Settle, with views of Ingleborough (Next Week). 17 members finished at the town centre completing 19 miles.
