Walk for John Crook Sep 3rd

Ten group members met for the start of this walk which was designed as a sort of comeback for John Crook after recovering from his hip operation. We would all do a circuit of Entwistle reservoir (about 3 miles) and John would then leave us and the rest would continue on another walk of about 7.5 miles. On our way round Entwistle we were met by Tom and Ade who had arrived just after we had left the car park and gone the opposite way round the reservoir.  John managed really well walking round and enjoyed the company.

After a coffee stop eight of us then set off on the second part of the walk which comprised mostly of the current Amble route and part of the original Amble plus a few bits of my own choosing. After the Strawbury Duck and Edge Fold we left the Amble route, heading NW to Bolton Barn farm and Tom Barn, with excellent views all around, before re-joining the Amble which we continued along, with a stop for lunch, until we arrived at the original white sink route leading down to the stream at the bottom. Alas, the white sink, which was for years a watched for marker that we were in the right place, is no longer to be found and the descent was quite overgrown with reeds, and long grasses. However, we made our way through OK and carried on until we picked up the narrow path to Whewells where Mac gave an interesting talk on the history of the ruin.

Finding the stile which we needed to gain access to the fields leading to the A666 was a bit of a problem due to all the reeds and undergrowth but Ken came to the rescue using his high-tech device. The last couple of miles were along the Amble route, under the pylons, and back to the cars by 2.30 pm after a total of 10 miles. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, there was much laughter and banter all the way round with a few ideas, as ever, on solving all the world’s problems.
