Chorley 4 peaks, July 23rd

Nine of us met at St. Peter's Club for the start of the Chorley 4 Peaks walk. This was originated by the Church Lads and Church Girls Brigade, Chorley St. Peters Company and has been going for at least 21 years and probably longer. It has been a challenge event over the years although not always appearing in Strider because the mileage is given as 15 which is less than the 20 the LDWA require for the main walk in an event.

We headed through the woods to reach our 1st peak, Healey Nab, 210m, and then made our way to Watermans Cottage and round Anglezarke reservoir following the Amble route to Rivington green where we turned left up the road and continued to the top barn where we had a coffee stop. Rivington Pike, 362m,was our 2nd peak and we then used the original route directly over Rivington Moor, which was relatively dry, to our 3rd peak, Winter Hill,456m.Someone has painted the trig point there and applied a lovely red Lancashire rose on each side.

A steep descent followed to reach Horden Stoops where we took our lunch break. Again the terrain, which can be notoriously wet, was mostly quite dry apart from the last 5 yards or so.The final peak of the day, Great Hill 381m was arrived at by way of Spitlers and Redmonds Edges and then it was downhill to White Coppice, round the reservoir to Higher House Lane and back to the cars by 3.30pm. Unfortunately the last 300 yards before Primrose Cottage were marred by the path having become quite overgrown and nettly since we were there two weeks ago and I think I lost a few brownie points with that, but hey ho!
