Wheelton (Whins Lane) Nr. Chorley. Thurs. 28 May 15

It was a bright, breezy but cool start for the eight people who turned up for this short notice walk from Whins Lane. We followed the Leeds Liverpool canal for the first couple of miles leaving it just after going under the M65 to reach the B5256 not far from Riley Green. Here Bluetit Rescue, aka Sue A found a fledgling blue tit floundering on the busy road and not wanting it to be run over managed, after several attempts, to pick it up and put it back in the long grass verge.

Continuing round Hoghton Tower and Hoghton Bottoms we had a coffee stop alongside the River Darwen before ascending to Butler’s Delf and through Billinge woods into Witton Park for our early lunch stop by the lake. The afternoon saw us following a short section of the Witton Weavers Way through Higher Broadhalgh to just before Higher Whitehalgh farm and then a bit of the 10 Foty walk to bring us into Abbey Village.

The afternoon stop was by the lake in Brinscall with the final three miles of the walk passing Brinscall Hall, the Dressers Arms and through fields to arrive back at Whins Lane after completing 17.2 miles, the furthest Julie has ever walked and she was really pleased with herself.

Despite the cool wind, which was quite strong at times and with us all the day, everyone enjoyed the walk and we had some excellent scenic views on the way round.

Thanks Doreen.
