Stanza Stones Stage Two

...

Fourteen members set out from a sunny Hebden Bridge and walked up the road to Nut Clough, where the path led gently uphill through the woods until steepening through the fields above, just enough to necessitate layer removal (a far cry from the cold wind of the previous week!) An old farm track then led to Hebden Equestrian Centre, before a mucky crossing of Wadworth Moor ended in the steep descent to Lowe Bridge. What goes down usually has to go up, and our route now climbed again and we enjoyed a coffee break under trees, looking back towards Wadworth Moor. We continued uphill to the castellated Lower Heights Farm (if it was designed to intimidate marauding Lancastrians it failed, as we were all made of sterner stuff). The crossing of Warley Moor was more intimidating though, especially for anyone not wearing gaiters. After crossing to the farmhouse at Slade, we had a tarmac section along Cold Edge Road, alongside the grey waters of Warley Reservoir. Although the sun had hidden itself, the road failed to live up to its name, and after 2km, we began the gentle climb onto Nab Hill, and along the edge to a lunch stop next to our third Stanza Stone, "Mist", and were entertained by a cyclist with a drone (who thought we were mad when we asked him if his drone could deliver pies!) The afternoon's walk continued along Nab Hill's edge, with excellent views, to cross the B6141, then a quiet lane and track led to the busy Manywells Brow, after which we dropped down to Hallas Bridge, over Harden Beck. A delightful riverside path continued beside the Beck, through woodland and past waterfalls, before climbing up to Cragg Wood and later dropping to cross Bingley Golf course and Harden Beck once more, to finish the stage in Bingley.
