Sabden; Tuesday walk from Watt Street 21 Oct. 14

Watt Street, Sabden. Tuesday 21 October 2014

The weather forecast was poor with gale force winds and heavy showers predicted. Neverheless eight of us convened in Sabden to do an 18 mile, mainly low level walk, round the villages closest to Pendle Hill.  We headed out of Sabden climbing steadily to pass Churn Clough Reservoir and across the moor to reach the "Nick of Pendle", where we were caught in the worst bit of weather we were to see all day, with gale force winds and torrential rain.  As soon as we started dropping down toward Pendleton conditions improved considerably, and apart from short lived showers, we were able to make our way comfortably through Pendleton, Worston and on to Downham, where we had lunch.

The afternoon started with an easy, steady climb over the northern ridge from Pendle, which took us through Clay House, Hecklin and Ravens Holme to Annel Cross.  We then dropped down past Black Moss Reservoirs into Barley, where a short afternoon break was taken.  Newchurch in Pendle was the next village on the list, which then left us only with Sabden Fold, before returning to Sabden via Stainscombe. On this last section we felt the full blast of the wind and rain again, the first we had seen all afternoon.

Thanks to the seven hardy souls who joined me after a weather forecast which didn't encourage outdoor activity.

Thanks Dave for this report and for leading the walk. You really will have to try harder with the weather next time though! Needless to say it didn't deter the usual banter and good humour, and woe betide the faint hearts in our group next time we see them, who chose to cuddle up in bed, rather than join us for a bit of 'fresh' air!
