Moses Gate - Tues 9 Sept 14

Moses Gate - Tues 9th. Sept. 14

21 walkers left Moses Gate Country Park. We started with a walk around Crompton Lodge then followed the River Croal to Clammerclough Bridge, where we crossed back over before joining the River Irwell which we followed to Stoneclough. This is where we left the Park and skirted an industrial estate and a power station before getting back into the woods and rejoining the Irwell for a short distance.

After leaving the Irwell, we arrived at Clifton House Farm and then Clifton Country Park. Unfortunately the visitor centre doesn’t open on Tuesdays so we couldn’t use the toilets. It’s a good job there were plenty of trees!! We walked through the woods before emerging onto the main road through Clifton. Left at the church and back into the Park.

We had lunch at the “lookout” over looking the lake before crossing the Irwell once again.

Moving quickly past the water treatment works, we were soon back into trees. A little path on the left led us up to the top of Giants Seat Wood. We nearly lost a couple of walkers here due to the blackberries being so ripe and juicy!

Eventually we dropped down to the Horseshoe pub at Ringley and then followed the old canal tow path (no sign of the canal) to the steps leading up to the road.

We crossed the road and then picked up the now disused Manchester, Bury and Bolton canal which we followed past the locks at Nob End to the Meccano Bridge.

It was then an easy walk along the tow path with views across to Winter Hill in the distance and swans, dragonflies and moorhen chicks on the canal.
