Rivington - Tues. 17 June 14

Rivington - Tues. 17 June 14

Considering quite a number of our 'regulars' were either away on holiday or otherwise engaged, it was encouraging to have 20 members turn up for the walk. This was no doubt helped by a few days of settled weather leading up to the walk, the promise of another dry, mainly sunny day and the fact that Rivington is close to home for many of our members.

The walk itself headed outwards on well walked paths and tracks, to the east of the Upper Rivington and Anglezarke reservoirs, to the picturesque cricket ground and hamlet of White Coppice, where we had a short coffee break. Turning back on ourselves from this point, we then took field paths to Healey Nab, passing a couple of small, but nevertheless attractive reservoirs en route. This route normally has a short section that can best be described as being 'deep mud', but on the day it had dried up completely and was no problem whatsoever. Our lunch break was taken, in warm sunshine, on the fine viewpoint of Healey Nab.

After lunch John, our walk leader for the day, led us over Grey Heights and down Heapey Fold Lane to the west of Anglezarke Reservoir. He then took us away from the reservoirs and along a path running alongside the M61, before cutting back to the Upper Rivington Res. and across the embankment to the vllage of Rivington. Now only a short length of woodland, which contains the adventure course of 'Go Ape', remained as we continued alongside the Lower Reservoir back to our cars. A relatively easy walk which surprised many when our GPS's showed it as being slightly over 10 miles in length. Many thanks John from all of us.
