Tuesday Walk May 6th

Hutton  Roof & Farleton Fell Walk

13 members of the group plus 2 guests and 2 dogs started out on this walk from the Cinderbarrow picnic site car park. After crossing a few fields with long, wet grass we made our way through Dalton Old Hall to the old quarry car park. A gentle ascent through Dalton Crags brought us to the top of Hutton Roof just in time for our coffee break. For a fell that is only 274m high, the views are quite extensive – Ingleborough, Gragareth, the Barbondale fells to the south and east, the Lakes to the west and the Howgills were all in sight.

We descended via Potslacks to continue along a section of the Limestone Link and then the Lancaster canal where we stopped for lunch. A short walk along a narrow country lane took us to the foot of Farleton Fell where we began our climb up. This commenced on a fairly steep, though good, path which led to a cross path where we turned right and followed lovely grassy paths to the cairn which is slightly lower than the actual summit at 265m. The wide-ranging views we had seen from Hutton Roof were much clearer and sharper now.

We made our way downhill, passing lots of limestone pavement to pick up an old path through woodland full of masses of bluebells and continued through Burton-in-Kendal, over Hanging Hill, (a little sting in the tail), to arrive back at Cinderbarrow at 3.40pm.
