Tuesday Walk, March 25th

Hurst Green Tuesday Walk

A dull, rainy start meant that, for the 10 people who arrived for this walk, waterproofs were donned  at the start and stayed on for much of the day. We began on a short, but uphill, road section before crossing the main road and going down the drive to Merrick’s Hall where, judging by the amount of cans accumulating by the side of the path, they had had several very good parties! Continuing past Bailey Hall we made our way, ascending through Hudd Lee Wood, and eventually to the top of Longridge Fell and the trig point on Spire Hill.

As it was still a bit early for lunch, our leader, Gareth, took us on path through the woods which was a bit wet, shall we say, at times. However, he did find a comparatively sheltered spot where we stopped for lunch. The path then led through more woodland sections and a bit full of Christmas trees before coming to the zig-zag track which took us down to the road at Turner Fold.

From here we picked up on the route of one of the Mid-Week Kanters for a short while, descending to the River Hodder, passing an ancient cross, before arriving at the sting in the tail – a series of over 100 steps ! We then passed through the always impressive Stonyhurst College and a few muddy fields arriving back at our cars after walking 10 miles at 2.20pm.
