SKIDDAW FOR MAC

                               Skiddaw for Mac. - Thursday 29th.August 2013

We took the bus from Keswick to the start of our walk at the Ravenstone Hotel, on the eastern side of Bassenthwaite Lake. From there our route led, at first steeply upwards, then at a slightly easier angle as we followed the line of the Allerdale Ramble to the top of Ullock Pike. It was a pity the mist was down to spoil fine views often seen from there. Nevertheless we carried on along Longside Edge and over Carl Side, then up the very steep, slippery path and finally along the summit ridge to the top of Skiddaw.

This was our goal, as a few years ago one of our members at the tender age of......(better not say but I can say he's getting on a bit), decided he was too old to attempt all the 'Wainwrights', but declared he'd like to visit the highest point in each of Wainwright's 7 books. This was Mac's last one. Well done 'owd lad!

After lunch, hidden from the strong wind and driving drizzle behind the wall of the summit shelter, we continued northwards from the trig point, down over Bakestall to join the Cumbria way at the foot of Birkett Edge.

Once on the Cumbria Way we were out of the elements and on a good track that led us to Skiddaw House and a coffee break, spoilt somewhat when the midges descended on us.

Fortunately midges can't fly as fast as we can walk, and in ever improving conditions and still on the Cumbria Way, we made our way pleasantly below Lonscale Fell round to the car park between Latrigg and Skiddaw. Here we left the Cumbria Way and made our way easily to the fine viewpoint of Latrigg. We took time to take in the views and after another short break for drinks, we headed back to Keswick and the cafe, next to the bus station, in Booths supermarket.

In spite of poor conditions on top, all seemed to enjoy their day on the hills.
