AN OUSTER NOT AN OYSTER

Tuesday 6th. August 13 - 'An Ouster not an Oyster'.

The walk started from Dunsop Bridge and took a line below Beatrix Fell, passing through the farms at Beatrix and Burn House, before heading up the steep ridge to Dunsop Head. A short distance below the summit we found a sheltered spot and took a welcome coffee break.

Crossing Dunsop Head can at times be a wet boggy affair, but today conditions underfoot were good and with fine views all round, we descended the eroded path down to the lonely farm at Whitendale.

From here our way was steeply uphill again as we headed up and over, what was in places, the very boggy shoulder to the North of Middle Knoll, before descending to the equally lonely Brennand Farm.

There was no respite as our roller coaster of a walk started, what was to be our stiffest climb of the day up Ouster Rake. We did cheat a little, however, by having our lunch stop part way up. Once refreshed, crossing the ridge and the descent down Rams Clough to the Trough of Bowland didn't give us any problems. From there it was straightforward walking, avoiding the road where possible, back to our cars in Dunsop Bridge.

In the end we clocked up around 14 miles, the weather was kind to us throughout and the day was much enjoyed by all 17 members on the walk.

Thanks John.
