The Walk:-

Walk leader:- Dave Taylor

When I arrived at Downham, the car park was almost full and there must have been thirty to forty people waiting. A record turn out I thought, how are we going to get this lot round in reasonable time. In fact "The Irregulars" were doing a walk from the same starting point. They were soon away for their 8.30 start and sixteen of us were left for our 9.00 start to walk over and around Pendle.

Off we went on a bright, windless day, more than we could really hope for on the last day of October.  Our route took us easliy on field paths by Clay House and Lane Head to cross the road onto the moor.  The climb proper started here as we ascended the steepest part of Pendle passing Robin Hood's or Fox's Well, which is situated just below the escarpment. Onto the summit plateau and up to the trig. point with great views all around. Crossing the hill we decended into Ogden Clough and followed this down to towards the reservoirs, where we left the track and with a short climb crossed Ogden Hill and down to Under Pendle House. Field paths again dropped us into Barley where we had lunch by the river.

Passing through Narrowgates and up past White Hough we arrived at the trig. point on Stang Top, which had been painted Claret and Blue, I assume by some supporter of Burnley. We then had to cross the only really muddy part of the walk as we decended to Black Moss Farm.  Our way back took us across Twiston Moor and down to Smithy Fold, passing Twiston Mill and over field paths back to Downham.

A walk of just under fourteen miles, a little bit shorter than I expected it to be, but a very enjoyable circuit, and very nice to see how many other walkers and runners were out enjoying "Good Old Pendle"
