Walk from Settle, October 1st

Six group members were joined by John, from the Wirral, for this short notice walk from Settle on a fine but a bit nippy early autumn morning. Our route took us over Giggleswick Scar and into Feizor before continuing into Austwick where we had a morning coffee stop. Next came a climb through Oxenber and Wharfe Woods before descending to the minor road leading to Wharfe and our dinner stop on the lower slopes of Moughton Scar.

The afternoon started with a fairly long climb up from Helwith Bridge and along Moor Head Lane before turning right to descend to Stainforth. Although this path is described as the Ribble Way it isn't near the river here and it was the only bit of the walk that was a bit muddy underfoot. We then climbed Stainforth Scar to reach Lower Winskill Farm where we took a short afternoon break in the sunshine. Leaving here we carried on downhill to Langcliffe before another ascent, although a brief one, and turned right through the fields to arrive back at Settle about 3.40pm.
