Hallowe'en Walk

Walk Leader: John Clarke

Number on walk: 22

Distance: 11 miles

Weather: Wet

No other place to walk on Hallowe'en but Pendle Hill, Lancashire.

Due to the increased presence of witches (sorry walkers) in the area, the time was brought forward to start at 9.45 from the beautiful village of Downham. (Grid reference SD 784441, What3words: showering. hospitals.initiated)

Although the weather forecast was 90% rain all day, we had a fabulous turnout of 22 walkers in total (think it was the chance of winning a prize for the best fancy dress that enticed them). After the gentle incline across the fields to Downham Moor, we then met the steep incline of Pendle Hill. A challenging part of the walk was had by most due to the rain and I'd like to say the views were worth it when we got to the top but unfortunately, it was misty and the views were sparse. We then descended down the path to Barley where lunch was eaten sheltered under the beautiful Autumn trees near the stream. Luckily the rain stopped and left us alone for the rest of the day giving us the opportunity to see the splendour of Pendle Hill as we walked through the cluster of Black Moss Reservoirs. Black Moss Road was followed for a short while toward Twiston where we then followed the Ings Beck to Downham Mill and then back over the incline to Downham Village where we had a well-deserved beverage of our choice in the Asherton Arms.

A wet and muddy but great day was had by all witches, ghouls, and walkers.
