A large group of 21 turned out for this 11 mile walk from Hurstwood, south of Burnley. A reasonably challenging route incorporating 2000ft of climbing. The route took us past Hurstwood and Cow Green reservoirs before heading gently
uphill to the car park on the Long Causeway. Crossing the main road here, we took the path along the perimeter of a windfarm, before turning east with views of Stoodley Pike in the distance. We eventually dropped steeply down to the valley
road and the rather grim hamlet of Portsmouth.

This wasn’t a place to linger so we set off steeply uphill on a track to our lunch spot which provided views into Calderdale. The route continued on a very boggy path where we encountered some very frisky highland cattle with a lot of excess
energy. We burnt them off, however, and made the summit which was clear and provided good views in all directions. The descent was long and steep, but we arrived in Holme Chapel intact with only short sections of the Pennine and
Burnley ways leading us back to the car park. Thanks to all who turned up.
