The Walk:-

Walk Leader - John Evenden

Due to Jeff Parr being unable to lead the walk, John Evenden stepped in with a slight change of plan, leading a circular walk of 14.5 miles, which proved to be quite sufficient on the day. Seven of us set off from Owd Betts, with a good covering of snow and ice accompanied by a bitter cold wind. We started on the Rochdale Way, branching left to pass Cheesden Fold, up Tom hill and after dropping to Paradise, up to the Coal Rd, round Fecit Hill and up again to the monument cross on Whittle hill (In Memory of Geoffrey Molyneux, a flying officer and scout group founder, who was lost on a flying mission in 1955). We then crossed Scout Moor to pick up the Rochdale Way again and headed past Waugh's Well to Cowpe Lowe, then through Cragg Quarry to top of Leach (Hailstone hill) and onwards to Hammer hill. A slight diversion up Baggden Hillocks led us to view a Neolithic Burial Chamber in a stone circle (not on map). From there we climbed Top of Pike then dropped down to Hunger hill. After crossing the dam of Naden Middle Reservoir, a steady climb along Dickson’s Brow took us up to Knowl Hill and back to Owd Betts. The views were clear all day and the going was challenging. However, we managed 3 short breaks sheltered from the bitter wind. Everybody enjoyed themselves!? A 16:00 finish having climbed approximately 2800ft.
