A Loop from Langold - 2023

Today saw us meet at the Langold Park café for an 18ml route that promised to be a warm one.

Bill was leading and we all wished Carol a speedy recovery, Lorna and Karen S kept the pace up with them both chatting and walking up front all day.We had a visitor from Sherwood LDWA who had made contact as this was Karen C’s first group walk.

Leaving the park, we entered the plethora of dog walking paths through the woods to eventually find Dyscarr wood, leaving this wood we found the day had broken to a lovely blue-sky day with a slight breeze. On our way to Firbeck we were treat to some wonderful Blackberries. We found the church open at Firbeck whereby Aaron and Lorna had a wander around.

Over more fields we came to what was once RAF Firbeck then on towards the quaint hamlet of Stone. From Stone and the old mill, we found the paths to the impressive Roche Abbey where we had elevenses.

More woods after we walked along a sandy ridge with expansive views all the way to the Peak District this ridge took us to the very differently named Laughton en le Morthen but alas no public house.

After Laughton we found some long field paths with the day now a warm one we were glad when we came to Letwell and lunch under a tree on a grass triangle.

Walking through Letwell we came across some ‘scarecrows’… through the woods here we were redirected around a boggy path looking for some blue string we turned left and crossed the A60.

But not before I was vetoed from partaking a quick half in the Grey Horses Inn.

This is where we came across some of the most desperate paths we would come across today, over grown with Holly bushes, nettles and sticky bud plants, once we found the Bridleway this got a little better until we came to the two styles we had to negotiate (very overgrown, the one with the holly bush was brutal).

Finding Hodsock Priory (and it’s lovely chimneys) the park and farm we crossed the A60 again to find the car park.

Many thanks Bill for a lovely walk in some lovely countryside
