A Ramble around Rosso - Apr 2022

Marchs social walk saw most members * with a few visitors arrive at the Rossington park and Ride for a 08:30am off on what promised to be a cooler day than the previous week but a dry day.

Heading onto the Doncaster Greenway and crossing the Great North Road we followed the Doncastrian Way route through the woodland then towards and round the Fishamaina ponds at Hayfield Lakes arriving at Old Cantley.

Finding the old Steam powered Windmill we crossed the M18 and found one of the very old way marks for the Danum Trail (ed. One for another day). Finding the path alongside the M18 we found an early lunch stop at the Environmental Centre within Sandall Beat Woods (toilets to be found here).

After lunch we made our way past the Racecourse and Grandstand entrances, passing the site of the old Doncaster Rovers ground Belle Vue we found Doncaster Lakeside where most removed our coats as it had become a warm afternoon. We had another stop here and was treated to a few motor-ised boats on the marina end of the lake.

Finding the Greenway again we found the path parallel to the Poteric Carr nature reserve and along then under the ‘New road’ to find Amazonia (the I Port).

Another short section on the Greenway saw us enter Rossington town to find the Stirrup pub open for a swift pint. Another mile through the village saw us find the Park and ride and a very enjoyable day was had by all, many thanks Bill for leading and John (away on the Thames Path) for creating.

*Peter ran there from Dunsville, Dave was 30 seconds late as the M18 from his way was closed and we found John E waiting for us at the Eagle and Child Aukley (with pint in hand (just emptying)).
