A Country Kaleidoscope 14th October 2012

Walk Leader - Roy Turner

Eighteen walkers gathered at Cannon Hall Country Park on a wonderfully clear and frosty morning to explore the fine and largely under-rated countryside to the west of Barnsley. We walked through picturesque Cannon Hall Park leaving our footprints in the frost covered grass and crossed the lakes to the village of Cawthorne. From Cawthorne we by-passed Silkstone, crossed the infant River Don near Oxspring and walked through Roughbirchworth to enjoy our lunch stop in the centre of Penistone. The afternoon took us through Thurlstone (where one of our party was delighted to re-discover her chilhood home) and by Scout Dike Reservoir and the historic Gunthwaite Hall to finish in Cannon Hall Park. We were blessed with almost unbroken sunshine and perfect weather for walking and the views were superb, our thanks again go to Roy Turner and his able assistant Ian Forbes for leading yet another very successful walk.
