Sauntering around Snaith - 2023

Six folk met up at Snaith train station, 3 Vermuyden members, a visitor from East Yorks, Lincolnshire and a token Pirate.

Leaving the station, we found the river Aire where we followed the bank east to leave eventually onto Lodge Lane towards Gowdall. Once through Gowdall we crossed the Wakefield to Goole train line and the M62 to enter Pollington where we had elevenses in the Pinfold down Pinfold Lane.

Leaving Pollington we crossed the Aire & Calder Navigation (cut) at the Pollington Lock to begin a loop around an obstacle course that began with a lightning struck tree, blocking the style, a felled tree blocking the path all these were just the starters all with ploughed clay mud waterlogged fields. For afters we came across yet another waterlogged field that looked a little dicey… We followed the bottom field edge, along the side field edge to the corner, now the fun began. We all thought the path came straight across the field so needed to walk along the top edge to find the way out. Halfway along we found the pond… and no leader. Eventually we found him somewhat smug as no-one who recced with him remembered the path came diagonal across the file d to the corner. Were we all found Bill not muddy or WET.

We eventually crossed the Canal again not ¼ mile from the lock. Finding the TPT we followed this passed the Park Lodge shooting school that were doing a fine trade and had lunch just before Carr Lane.

Not long after lunch we came across the worse field today, the farmer had recently ploughed the field and obliterated the path, the best we got from our leader was head for the right of the bushes there is a bridge over the M62. After some expletives and sore ankles, we all crossed the M62 and entered East Cowick.

Leaving this pleasant village, we crossed the Wakefield/Goole line again and found the River Aire bank. We followed this for some time before we bared left to follow the Marsh Drain, Ings Road and George Street saw us back to our car park where we all were treated to some birthday cake from Adrian.

Many thanks Bill for leading.
