Around the Moss Brook - 17th November 2012

Thirteen brave souls decided to venture out on our walk despite a very unpromising wet forecast. We left Eckington Church at the appointed hour under grey and damp skies but within ten minutes the rain had stopped and shortly afterwards out came the sun and it stayed with us for most of the day. We were rewarded with a picturesque and very varied walk around the pretty Moss Valley between Sheffield and Chesterfield. We passed through the villages of Mosborough and Ridgeway to reach the head of the valley at Lightwood before dropping down to Birleyhay and eventually climbing out of the valley to reach Troway where we stopped for our lunch break. We passed a very pleasant hour enjoying a selection of superb cask ales in front of a warming open fire in the very welcoming Gate Inn.

The afternoon took us through Sicklebrook Farm (a clue in the name to the predominant industries of the Moss Valley in the 19th Century), Coal Aston, Summerley (with lovely views over the Drone valley), Apperknowle, Greenside and Marsh Lane before following Lady Ida's Drive through Eckington Woods to the finish.

All in all a superb walk with wonderful views and very well led by David Ashford - Many thanks again David!
