The Free Peaks Hike

A dry but overcast day saw ten folk make it on time to the car park at Phoenix Park for our November social walk

Aaron outlined the day telling that each three lumps to scale today are regenerated pit tips elevenses would be on the benches at Frickley Park, lunch would be the Flash if the ducks would leave us alone with a late afternoon pub stop 2 mile from the end in Great Haughton.

The first was Phoenix Park (also was Thurnscoe Pit tip) this quickly navigated past the stone sheep and the sculptures to cross the main road onto Chapel Lane. It must be said here that some paths today were in a muddy state that we have not seen in a while.

Once through the Hall we scaled the second lump Frickley Country Park (Frickley Pit tip). Here at Frickley thay have embraced their coal past and have at each shaft entry a cairn has been erected showing where each seam was and the depth down that they were.

Then the paths got worse as were skirted past the Frickley 4X4 off road centre.

Just to the north of Clayton we came across the only burnt out van we found today (Ed. see our Weds walks the Barnsley Boundary walk eastern section).

Negotiating the B6273 we found the path through Howell Wood then found our third Lump Grimethorpe Nature reserve (Grimethorpe Pit Tip) with a wind turbine on top.

Lunch was had on benches at the Ferrymoor Flash with coots, mallards and swans present.

After lunch we found the path alongside Edderthorpe Flash to cross the A6195 and finding the path around the GXO ASOS building to enter Little Haughton whereby we found the ‘old’ pit wheel for our group photo. The path around the golf Course found the Sandhill Tavern for a light beverage.

The last two miles saw us along the old trackway towards Goldthorpe but turned alongside the railway to find the car park.

A very enjoyable day had by all, many thanks Aaron.
