Decagon Three - The Yorkshire 3 peaks
The Series of walks are 10 open challenge walks I have decided to walk as part of my 50-year-old celebrations.
Number three an obvious one for us Yorkshire Folk, of course we all know the Yorkshire Three Peaks route.
Saturday 12th April. 08:00am
Driving through Horton we knew today was going to be a busy day on the hill, with some away at daybreak but us driving for 2 hours to arrive at Blea Moor Roadside parking we found this filling up somewhat.
We began with the route around to the Summit of Whernside in glorious sunshine with not a cloud in the sky and a nice cool breeze once above 200ft.
Summit number one photo took and in good spirits after a short break we were away. It must be said that as this route does get some traffic the path is well maintained with flagstones, limestone and shingle but it somewhat hard on the feet.
The horrible route down from Whernside gets no better, we missed the café at the farm and began the ascent of Number two. Ingleborough sees you over the pasture fields to TL and begin the first of two climbs onto the ‘shelves’ then at the bottom of the zig zag the climbing begins in earnest. Onto the flat plateau of Ingleborough and sheltering at the cross we could not help but laugh and admire some of the folk posing at the trig (ed. Yoga poses popular).
Our turn at the Trig and then the longish walk out to Horton where the Station Café for a Sausage sanger was calling then a quick pint in the Golden Lion was order of the day. An hour stop in Horton had us fully refreshed ready for the push up Pen Y Ghent.
Pen Y Ghent begins with the undulations that get steep at the end spitting you over the wall for a bit of a breather then begin the first of the two scrambles to find the summit trig some 100mtrs from the top of the second scramble.
Leaving summit number three you think the hard part is done, the ‘new’ walk out may leave out the infamous bog hop but it is still a long way to the road, then a mile on this road takes you back to Blea Moor Road and a lovely view over Ribblehead viaduct.
We reckon we did:
25 miles
2500 Ft of ascent
10.5 Hours took in total, inc. Stops.
