Finding Paths in Fenwick - 2023

Just three Vermuyden members and a visitor from East Yorkshire joined us on this month’s social walk around Fenwick.

After storm Babet we knew a bit of water would be knocking about (more of that later) but a sunny dry day was promised.

Leaving The Baxters Arms Fenwick we made our way through the village. Leaving the village, we came across some waterlogged fields that would be prevalent today.

Once we came to Thorpe in Balne no one fancied the path at the side of the houses, and we made two right turns on the minor road and found the end of the footpath.

Later along a rather long green lane that had a full ditch either side we came to an impasse.

It is here I attempted to gauge the depth of said obstruction with a stick, turning back as it was over knee deep, we made our way into the field (via a ditch jump) negotiated the problem (jumped back) and carried onto Thorpe Marsh Nature Reserve

Elevenses took on a bench here with its multitude of bird hides.

The route back to Fenwick saw us now move northwards through Moss (passed the ‘old’ Star inn) and the Demolished St Johns Fenwick.

We crossed the East Coast Main line here twice on a bridleway/track and a footpath, once it was manned (a fella came out) and made sure it was safe for us to cross. The footpath had a traffic light set up.

The amount of train movement on a Sunday was phenomenal all day we had the fast trains up and down the East Coast

But not before our last flooded path, at least this path had a three-bar fence whereby we could use the bottom wrung to shimmy along ala Krypton Factor.

Lunch was taken back at the Baxers Arms whereby we lost our East Yorkshire visitor (he had to travel back to Manchester).

By now decisions were made, the second loop had us go all the way to the New Junction Canal but it was 2.15pm when we left the Pub. With this morning’s gymkhana sessions, we had fallen behind with timings, but Pete had a plan.

A shortened second loop saw us find some Dear in a field and we all enjoyed our day many thanks to Pete for leading.
