A Nightjar we go Hunting - 2023

8 LDWA members met at Thorne North train Station car park for our February social walk.

We were promised blue skies and a dry day.

With a few Vermuyden Members MIA we had visitors from East Yorks, High Peak and a possible new member for High Peak as a newbie joined us.

The morning saw us negotiate out of Thorne via the M18 J6 roundabout then over the River Don at Jubilee Bridge. Green lanes took us to Fishlake and its very impressive Church. Back on the Riverbank we made our way to the elevenses stop at Kirk Bramwith Church yard.

Back along the Dun Navigation (in the opposite direction to last months walk) we arrived in Stainforth. Finding the Huddle Grounds, we then walked along the Ashy bank all the way to the M18, we went under at the cut then continued towards the railway and Thorne lock. Lunch was taken at The Windmill public house (sandwiches outside with a pint).

The afternoon saw us return to the car park (no-one packed in, everyone in good spirits) the snicket took us to the pathways to Moorends, Along Grange Road we entered the Pit Road at the old Pit gate.

To the right was Moorends recreational ground, a massive ground with Cricket, Football, Rugby, Crown Green Bowls all there, on our passing The Doncaster Belles football team were playing Lincoln City.

We entered the Thorne Moor (part of the largest low lying moor in Europe). A short ‘loop’ around the moor saw us find the 1ml long path to Wilkinson Avenue. A Short road walk (with pavement saw us find the path back to the Train Station car park.

Everyone appeared to enjoy the day and turned into a rather hot day for a February social walk.
