Stand & Deliver

Brough Haven was the start point for todays social walk. With a forecast dire if the rain didn’t get a shift on saw only three of us. Long suffering Vermuyden walk secretary, and two from East Yorks.

First of the bat, whilst putting socks and boots on I thought I saw a seal in the estuary right up close, in my defence it was early it turned out to be a washed-up log.

Register took, J P outlining the day (now Stand and Deliver makes sense).

Away from Brough Haven cp onto the Humber bank aka The Trans Pennine Trail. On our way to Mill Beck we had a bit of road walk that was nice to be away from the mud, some had also removed outer garments as the wet weather had not materialised and it had begun to warm up somewhat.

Over the A63 we eventually came to South Cave with its impressive Cave Castle Gate House and All Saints church. Once onto South Cave golf course a vision appeared out of the trees, Christine’s  golf game had been dumped so she joined us from South Cave. Through Little Wood Plantation we joined the Wolds Way with some lush views over to the Humber all the way to Brantingham not visited since my Wolds Way excursion last Summer. Lunch was taken at the Triton Inn.

Leaving Brantingham we joined a bit of the Beverley 20 route through South Wold Plantation. Following the Bev 20 we came down a lovely path (for the views rather than what was under foot) approx.. 5 yrds from the bottom JP decided we had took a wrong turn near the top. Bugger going backup we just walked a bit along a minor road happy happy.

We did come across a waymark never seen before by anyone in our party The Camino ingles de Santiago or The English Way, a lesser know spur of the famous cousin of Spain, this route was traditionally used by pilgrims from Northern England or Ireland.

Into Welton and its Church where we came across the notice board told the story of the capture of Dick Turpin. At Welton crossing we were stopped by a Hull Trains whereby we each guessed which way the train would come. JP won.

Through the brand-new housing estate that was formally the Brough Aerodrome and the link path back to the Humber bank was somewhat flooded so we took the dog walked path over the fence onto a bank then back over the fence at t’other end.

Walking back along the bank some utilised the Wall some played slip and slide along the bank but them on the wall missed their chance to find their prince.

Thanks JP for a smashing walk
