'A Pennine Odyssey' consists of a number of routes described by Ron Scholes in his book of that name. It is based on Alfred Wainwright's idea of a 'purely Pennine Way', lying along the full length of the Pennine range with its northern terminus at Hadrian's Wall. This is the 'main route', which runs from Edale, at the start of the Pennine Way, to Housesteads, on the Roman wall. Much of the route coincides with the Pennine Way but in places it deviates significantly from it, taking the walker to parts of the Pennines that the Pennine Way misses. For the most part these deviations take the route to the east of the Pennine Way, the exception being north of Cross Fell where the route stays on the higher ground to the west.

The book describes a number of alternatives from the main route and these are listed as Path Variants on this website. For those that wish to start the walk further south, the book describes several approach routes to enable the start to be made in Leek, Ashbourne or Buxton. These routes are also listed as Path Variants.
