Peak District Boundary Walk

Derbyshire, Gtr Manchester, S Yorkshire, Staffordshire, W Yorkshire

307 km / 191 miles
The current Peak District National Park boundary is almost identical to the one drawn up and proposed by Friends of the Peak District founders - Ethel and Gerald Haythornthwaite - 80 years ago. This 190-mile long distance walk never strays far from that boundary and celebrates both the huge diversity of our first national park and also its historical significance. It was created by Friends of the Peak District, a branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) and safeguards the landscapes of Britain's first national park, challenging and campaigning against developments that threaten the Peak District's beauty and tranquillity. The route aims to raise awareness of the Peak District's outstanding natural beauty and to encourage people to cherish and protect it.

Following existing paths, tracks and quiet lanes, there are dramatic crags and open moorland, quiet woodlands and popular trails.

A collaborative project, it has involved volunteers mapping the route and walking it on the ground using their local knowledge to make many improvements. Long distance walkers may enjoy the challenge of walking it in one go, but the route has been divided into manageable stages, each with at least a bus stop or car park, a toilet or a shop. The trail was officially launched in June 2017 with a big celebration, celebrity visitors, speeches, the unveiling of a plaque, food and drink, special outdoor pursuits market, music and dancing. Meanwhile volunteer Friends of the Peak District walked all 20 stages during the day. The Walk has a paperback guide, listed below, by well-known writer Andrew McCloy who gave a talk at the LDWA 2016 AGM.

The Walk takes in several Walkers are Welcome Towns shown on the map below (side-bar menu).
