Review:

Publisher's information 2022

The first part of the book deals with Ron`s association and friendship with Alfred Wainwright. There is a description of the English Pennines and details of their many meetings and conversations. There are lively stories about interludes at Kendal Green, with Wainwright`s interest in long distance routes and in Ron`s ideas for talks, walks and books. There is an account of AW`s first meeting with Harry Appleyard, and the following invitation to become one of his Helpers in the survey of the Pennine Way route. There are a number of letters written by Wainwright to HA, a list of instructions to the Helpers and examples of Appleyard`s drawings. This part also contains a fine selection of OS maps of the Pennine Way route, with many copies displaying AW`s fascinating annotations and comments.
The next part describes the Odyssey`s routes from the southern end of the Pennines to the Roman Wall. This includes descriptions of the starting points as acknowledged by Wainwright. There is also a South Pennine Triangle (SPT) route devised by Ron as an introduction to the area.
The walking route descriptions indicate the sections from south to north, and these are supplemented by Reader`s Logs of the Journey in the Appendix. They are numbered from 1 to 12, and contain details of locations and distances of both the main and alternative routes.
