Historical Walks through Lancashire and Yorkshire

Lancashire, N Yorkshire, York

235 km / 146 miles
This walk through Lancashire and Yorkshire is a series of 33 linked circular routes linking the two ancient county cities of Lancaster and York. It includes visits to the sites of seven castles and three abbeys. Other places visited include Garstang, Whalley, Clitheroe, Skipton, Ilkley and Knaresborough. All of these towns and the numerous villages encountered on the way are steeped in history and interest and worth a visit.

From Lancaster the route goes below the Forest of Bowland to the Ribble and Aire valleys, traversing the Pennines via Skipton into upper Wharfedale, and across the Washburn Valley (Heritage Centre off route) and north of Harrogate to Knaresborough, to end along the River Ouse into York The guidebook has been designed to incorporate the linear walk with circular walks varying in length between 4 and 12 miles which are ideal for a day’s family ramble. When passing through a number of towns and larger villages, the routes have been carefully designed to keep road walking to a minimum.
