Palatine Plod

Cumbria, Gtr Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside

612 km / 380 miles
The Palatine Plod is a 380 mile long distance walk that aims to reflect the County of Lancashire, prior to 1974 when boundary changes were made. Starting from Liverpool South Parkway Station, it links the most distant towns of Mossley and Barrow-in-Furness, and visits what was Lancashire's highest point - The Old Man of Coniston - before finishing on Walney Island.
The walk is called 'Palatine' because the county's historic title was the Palatine County of Lancashire. The definition of a county palatine is an area ruled by a hereditary nobleman enjoying special authority and autonomy from the rest of a kingdom or empire.
The website which accompanies the walk breaks it down into 26 stages, all of which can be undertaken using public transport. There is also information and photos of places along the route in each section.
Please note that there is a break in the route between Silverdale and Grange-over-Sands stations. Public transport should be used between these two places due to the extreme danger of crossing the sands of Morecambe Bay. The overall walk distance and GPX file includes a direct line between these two stations.
