Irwell Sculpture Trail

The Trail links the centre of Manchester with the moors above Bacup and makes use of a former railway line and follows the former Bolton - Bury Canal and through Bury, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall to the finish, near Irwell Spring, and where it links with the Rossendale Way. Since 1987, various sculptures have been sited along the Trail, the intention being that, on completion, there will be 50 in place.

The Irwell Sculpture Trail is to be transformed by a five year re-development. Some of the money will provide GPS and mobile phone technology for onsite interpretation as well as the production of downloadable content such as audio guides and video from a new and rejuvenated website. New routes link it other tourist attractions such as Salford Quays and Rossendale Adrenaline Gateway. Work started in August 2008 with the Trail relaunching in 2010.
