Friends Way 1: George Fox's Journey

The Friends Way part 1 starts in Barley, Lancashire, passing over the summit of Pendle Hill to and through part of the Yorkshire Dales to end at Sedbergh, Cumbria. It combines glorious scenery with superb wildlife and striking geology, and it also visits many places that were crucial in George Fox's journey of 1652. He preferred to deliver his sermons outdoors, dismissing churches as 'steeple-houses'. His long walk and discussions with Seekers and other dissidents led to the creation of the Society of Friends, first known as Quakers. (Source: Rucksack Readers)

The route passes through East Lancashire and North Yorkshire, taking in some of the finest views in Pendle, Craven and the Dales, including Malham Cove. Parts of its route are shared with the Pendle Way, Pennine Way, Pennine Bridleway, Ribble Way, Dales High Way and Dales Way.

Friends Way 2 (Margaret Fell's Journey) was added in May 2023.

December 2024:The Friends Way 1 follows the road under Dent Head viaduct on the route into Dentdale. A landslip has closed a section of this road "for the foreseeable future". "Although an unsuspecting walker might carefully pass without too much difficulty, the likelihood of further collapse is such that the Westmorland and Furness Council has issued an emergency closure notice for ALL traffic – including walkers and cyclists."
