LDWA (BBN & EH) WALK ON 14 APRIL 2013 FROM GADDESDEN ROW “A Lovers’ Knot” Summary 20 mile walk through the Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire countryside via Beechwood Park, Holywell, Whipsnade, Dunstable Downs, Studham, Nettleden, Frithsden, Potten End, Gaddesden Place and the Golden Parsonage. Plenty of variety - wooded and in the open, level and undulating - with rather more hills in the afternoon than in the morning. Start at 09.00 hrs from off-road parking area alongside Gaddesden Row Primary School (Grid ref: TL 050130) Gaddesden Row is a long almost straight road about two miles long. Getting to the start The final approach is unavoidably via small roads. Three possibilities are shown below. Although described as if travelling via the M25, M1 or A41, they are equally suitable for people starting their journey from nearby places such as St Albans, Leighton Buzzard and Hemel Hempstead. (If using SatNav, head for HP2 6HG.) • Leave M25 at J22 and take A1081 for St Albans. After A1081 continue through St Albans to A5183 towards Redbourn. At roundabout on outskirts of Redbourn, TL to B487 (signed Hemel Hempstead Road). Then take 2nd R, to ANOTHER road signed Hemel Hempstead Road, and almost at once TL to Gaddesden Lane. Continue a long way on Gaddesden Lane which eventually, at sharp R bend signed “Jockey End”, becomes Gaddesden Row. Look out for Old Chequers PH on L. School (and parking area) is on the R about 0.6 miles further on. • Leave M25 at J21 and take MI(N) for Hemel Hempstead, where leave MI for A414. Stay on A414 into Hemel Hempstead until the Plough Roundabout (“Magic Roundabout”), where join Leighton Buzzard road (A4146). At Water End, when Red Lion PH seen on L, TR to small road (signed Red Lion Lane). Continue on this road, via Briden`s Camp, to Gaddesden Row where TL and after about 0.3 milea see school and parking area on R. • Leave M25 at J20 and take A41 to north towards Hemel Hempstead. After some miles, at first junction, leave A41 for A414 towards Hemel Hempstead and continue to Plough Roundabout (“Magic Roundabout”), where join Leighton Buzzard road (A4146) and continue as at 2nd option above.
