BBN40: Walks & River Cruise - Sunday 3rd September 2023 Report and Photo

A good time was had by all who joined us for the penultimate special event to celebrate our 40th anniversary.

The biggest challenge was choosing which of the 3 morning options to go for. A nice leisurely 6 mile walk from Priory Marina was appealing to most, but a short 2 hour walk along Bedford River Ouse, led by a passionate and knowledgeable Blue Badge guide, who taught us a great deal about the history of the river, was equally enticing and a little different. We certainly understood why it was entitled ‘The Jewel in Bedford’s Crown’ by the end of our informative trip. A 3rd option of a fun, fact finding treasure hunt made everyone’s decision a difficult one.

No one was disappointed. Those who followed Chris southwards on the six miler, coming close to the famous Cardington Airship hangars, all returned happy and smiling.
The ‘Crown Jewellers’ came back equally happy with heads packed full of knowledge about subjects as diverse as King Offa, the history of Bedford Rowing club and the site of John Bunyan’s baptism. We also saw where Steve and Pearl met for their first blind date. Our guide was unaware of this momentous event but assured us he would investigate a blue plaque to mark the spot.

The groups of 4 worked well as 2 teams and the successful completion of all their questions were rewarded, not by ingots of gold but by sticks of chocolate! They also picked up a few variations for a challenge walk description. Perhaps in the future we could ‘slip’ right, ‘slink’ left ‘forge’ ahead, or simply ‘wander’ on (hopefully not aimlessly).

All returned safely to board the boat at the marina for our 3 hour cruise on the river. Whilst our skipper taught us more interesting facts, not least the difference between a foot pedal flush and an emergency red chord in the loo, we enjoyed our food. Afternoon tea or cream tea; vegan falafel wrap or ploughman’s, everyone seemed delighted with their choice. Not exactly a booze cruise, but a beer or wine helped wash it all down nicely.

An event offering such variety takes a great deal of planning, from booking the boat and the guide, to downloading the treasure hunt and collating the food orders. Thanks to all the hard working BBN committee, with special thanks to Chris for leading, Terry for overseeing the hunt and Sarah for pulling the whole thing together.
