Thornborough Henges | Saturday 9 April 2022

Walk Leader: Ann Grainger
Participants: 4
Mileage: 20 miles
Walk Report: Ann Grainger
Weather: Cold, dry and sunny, cloudy later

We left Leeming village via Leeming Mill, passing by Thorpe Perrow and onto Snape where the 6th wife of Henry 8th lived (Catherine Parr).  We had our first break at Well.  From there we walked through Nosterfield Nature Reserve and onto our first henge hidden in the woods.

Thornborough Henges consist of 3 Henges mirroring Orion's Belt, built during the Neolithic, bronze era between 3500 and 2500 BC.  The banks were once covered in white gypsum which would have been seen for miles.  They also include a cursus, 2 parallel ditches, burial mounds, settlements and a mortuary enclosure making this one of the most important ancient sites in Britain.  We then made our way back via Burneston."
