I decided to change the route and use the Footpaths and tracks in and around Cotterdale. Some of the local footpaths were a bit disappointing but the views certainly were not. A joint decision was made to reduce the distance of the walk and concentrate more on the quality of the walk and the views in particular giving everyone a chance to enjoy them. Countless pictures were taken. This is a must-see area to re-visit and there is always the opportunity to see the odd Red Squirrel.

We set off from Hawes taking a road section and then a footpath to reach Hardraw. We then took our first ascent of the day to reach Herne Top. At this junction we used the track along the top and then descended through the woods to reach the hamlet of Cotterdale. From here we had a short road section and then a continuous track section to climb up to locate a Footpath on Abbotside Common. We crossed this moor to reach the wallside Footpath of The Highway. From here we continued South East to then take a Riverside Footpath to reach Appersett. From Appersett we took another short road section to reach and go below Appersett Viaduct and then return using well used footpaths back to Hawes.
