From Newgate Bank we dropped down to Shaken Bridge and reached Hawnby village by road where we had a short break before climbing Hawnby Hill to take the track to the now infamous Bilsdale Mast.  The burnt out remains of the old Bilsdale Mast was fenced off and impressively resembled an exploded aeroplane and required a security guard to escort us off the area.  A new road has been built so construction traffic can access to build the new mast and we encountered a cement lorry in crawler gear coming up the very steep hill as we walked down into Fangdale Beck and lunch at St John’s church.  A change of route after lunch was decided on due to overgrown bracken in the area and we returned to Newgate Bank along the valley road.
