Wander Around Wensleydale | Saturday 11 January 2020

Walk Leader: Anton Nielsen
Participants: 6
Mileage: 18 miles
Ascent: 2,250 ft
Walk Register: Yes
Walk Report: Robert Cope

Undeterred by forecasts of high winds and heavy rain, we hardy six set off from Leyburn Marketplace.  The high winds (well in excess of 40 mph at times?) certainly materialised and remained with us for most of the day, especially on the higher and more exposed ground. The rain however was somewhat kinder, holding off completely until about 1.30pm.  And, unusually for January, the temperature was above 10 deg C for the entire day.

Leaving westwards via the Leyburn Shawl our route was an elongated anti-clockwise oval taking in Preston-under-Scar, closeby to Redmire and then Carperby, before turning south via Aysgarth Falls to the outskirts of West Burton.  The easterly return leg via Morpeth Wood took us to West Witton where we lunched - shortly before the rain set-in!  Finally alongside the River Ure to Wensley, returning to Leyburn from the south.

Overall a much better day (weather-wise) than we might have expected.  Thanks Anton for your leadership, an interesting and diverse route and a thoroughly enjoyable outing.
