That Horse is Kantering Again! | Saturday 22 January 2022

Walk Leader: John Leeman
Participants: 17
Mileage: 18 miles
Ascent: 2,600ft
Walk Report: John Leeman
Weather: Cold and dry, little wind

The turnout of 17 represented a geographically wide range of members from West and East Yorks and Northumberland as well as North Yorkshire regulars.  Many reported leaving home at sub zero temperatures but by the time we set out from Kilburn the rising sun was having an effect and additional warmth was provided by the steady 3 mile uphill slog to a crossing of the main A170 road between Thirsk and Scarborough.  Here the terrain flattened out and when the village of Scawton was reached we took a quick drinks break, taking advantage of some seating in a picturesque setting.

After Cold Kirby the route descended through woods to Nettledale, a tributary of the Rye, and before turning uphill again we got a dramatic glimpse of Rievaulx Abbey, lit by a rare burst of sunshine.  Lunch was taken on the plateau before the long descent to another Medieval landmark, the splendid ruins of Byland Abbey.

This had been a good day for January, dry throughout with little wind and occasional sun.  We had entertained a new member and her guest friend on their first LDWA walk and I am glad to say that we had provided them with a positive enough experience for them to declare an enthusiasm to return as regulars!
