Walk Report: Robert Cope

Sixteen hardy souls assembled in Leyburn on a damp, cold and misty Saturday morning for another North Yorkshire group adventure.  The weather wasn’t “A New One On Us” for a January walk!

Heading North we climbed gently to Bellerby and then onwards to Black Plantation adjacent to the military firing range.  We then turned north-west along a mix of road and track to Scar Spring Wood.

Keeping our heads well down along the very edge of the firing range we finally escaped it unscathed at Hags Gill Bridge (where we stopped briefly for lunch in the now descending mist).

After lunch, and with the visibility decreasing, we continued climbing (and scrambling) across some quite tricky terrain, slippery hillsides and at times barely distinguishable tracks and snow covered heather – before finally descending to Preston-under-Scar.

From there we were on easier terrain past Bolton Hall, through Wensley Park and a short roadside return to Leyburn.

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable days outing.  Thanks to Wendy for expertly navigating us around in quite challenging conditions.
