This week’s walks Thursday 9th July - Around Ashridge The forecast is for a warm dry day. Please remember your suncream and hats. Also please bring plenty of water for the day as there will not be anywhere to buy drinks. 18 miles. Start 9.30 from the Ashridge Estate Visitor Centre, by the Bridgewater Monument (nearest post code HP4 1LT). Then turn off up the long drive to the Monument. Parking is free for all however it is possible to make a donation if you would like to. We will be following the Ashridge Boundary Trail. The route is circular on a mix of paths and tracks, some of which are uneven in places and can get very muddy if it has been wet. When doing the recce there were a couple of paths where it is likely there may be overgrown vegetation due to the time of year. There are some steep hills on the route that can be slippery if it has been or is raining. There are sheep grazing in many sections of the route and it is possible we might encounter some cattle and deer. There is a possible cut back just after 8 miles should anyone want to shorten the route. Please bring sufficient refreshments for the whole day as we will not be passing pubs or cafes. It is anticipated there will be two, maybe three refreshment stops and the possibility of a visit to the cafe at the Bridgewater Monument at the end if we finish sufficiently early. Dogs are welcome, however the landowner requests that dogs be kept on leads. Start 9am from Wing Sports & Social Club (free public car park next to the Social Club). From Wing we head out towards Wingrave and Long Marston. At Wilstone we pick up the Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Cabal. We follow the Grand Union Canal back to Horton where we continue along the Outer Aylesbury Ring and head back to Wing via Mentmore. We will be stopping for lunch at The Red Lion at Marsworth. There will be time for drinks but please bring your own food. The route is suitable for dogs (according to Alfie) Leader: Jim Blakelock. And some funnies to finish: I went to a pub called 'The Light Brigade' recently. They certainly knew how to charge. Have you heard about the Abba themed pub - the toilets are amazing. What a loo! My local pub is called The Fiddle, but I never drink there. It’s a vile inn. What happened to the tennis ball who went into a busy pub? It got served straight away. What do you call a woman playing snooker with a pint on her head? Beatrix Potter. Have you seen the survey on how people walk home from the pub. The results are staggering. A man in the pub sold me a pirate Sat Nav. It tells you exactly where you arrrrr…..
