Marsworth Meanderings - Saturday 11th July 2026

Aren’t I the lucky one! To be joined by three lovely ladies for a walk around the countryside. Given the feedback about the conditions on Thursday’s walk, I had looked to see what alternative routes might work if we needed to shorten the 18 mile route, from Wing to Marsworth and back. But on the day, backup plans weren’t needed and we all got around the full circuit, although the pace did slow a bit towards the end of the day.
We met up at Wing at 9am while the temperature was still a decidedly chilly 20 degrees and headed out towards Wingrave. We stopped for our first break around 11am, under a nice shady tree. I think the slightly lower temperatures and a cooling breeze really helped, as everyone was feeling good. Although the route didn’t offer a great deal of shade, it was relatively flat which made for easy walking.
We were soon passing through Long Marston and then onto the Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal at Wilstone. The Red Lion at Marsworth was our lunch stop at 12:45 for a refreshing pint! The walk continued along the canal, and there was a little shade on the towpath. We stopped briefly at Horton Wharf and then continued across country towards Mentmore. The heat of the day was starting to have an impact on to slow climb up to Mentmore village, which necessitated another brief stop on the green in the village. Then back down towards Ledburn to visit the menagerie there: pelicans, red ibis, capybara and wallabies (including albino ones). We think we saw penguins in the pool but the view was hidden by a wooden fence.
We arrived back at Wing around 5pm. Thank you ladies for your wonderful company during the day.
