E-Route 2 UK Section - Middleton-in-Teesdale to Dover

Cheshire, Durham, Gloucestershire, Gtr Manchester, Kent, Medway, N Yorkshire, Oxfordshire, Staffordshire, Surrey, Warwickshire, W Midlands, W Yorkshire, Windsor & Maidenhead

911 km / 566 miles
The E2 in the UK was opened in 1999 as a result of work by the LDWA. Beginning (or ending) at Stranraer, it joins the Southern Upland Way to Melrose, then St Cuthbert's Way to Kirk Yetholm, from where it follows the Pennine Way.

At Middleton-in-Teesdale the E2 splits into two alternatives. This western alternative through central England leads to Dover, where the ferry to Calais links up with an E2 variant. Both E2 variants join together in Belgium, where they continue through Luxembourg to Nice in the south of France.

In the UK the E2 is generally not signposted, but links up the underlying trails which are waymarked and have various guidebooks and websites.

In detail:
Pennine Way National Trail, Middleton-in-Teesdale to Standedge; Oldham Way: Standedge to Mossley; Tameside Trail: Mossley to Broadbottom; Etherow - Goyt Valley Way: Broadbottom to Compstall; Goyt Way: Compstall to Disley; Gritstone Trail: Disley to Rushton Spencer; Staffordshire Way: Rushton Spencer to Cannock Chase; Heart of England Way: Cannock Chase to Bourton-on-the-Water; Oxfordshire Way: Bourton-on-the-Water to Kirtlington; Oxford Canal: Kirtlington to Oxford; Thames Path National Trail: Oxford to Weybridge; Wey Navigations: Weybridge to Guildford; North Downs Way National Trail: Guildford to Dover.

For updates and diversions to the E2 in the UK view the pages for the constituent trails.

SEPTEMBER 2023: The footway alongside the M2 across the Medway Bridge, near Rochester, Kent, was closed for safety improvements from June 2023 until the end of the year. While the closure is in place there is an hourly shuttle bus between 6am and 7pm (going south to north; 6.30am to 7.30pm the other way) which takes walkers across the bridge.
