Tops of the North (Carlisle and Cheviot to Cat and Fiddle)

Cumbria, Derbyshire, N Yorkshire, Northumberland, S Yorkshire, W Yorkshire

713 km / 443 miles
This is the second and final leg of Graham Wilson's 1,000-km high level walk linking County Tops (old and new) of northern England. From Carlisle to The Cheviot and the Northumberland coast, from the Durham moors to the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District, his entertainingly roundabout route finally returns to the moorland near Buxton where it began. The diverse tour takes in Hadrian's Wall and Northumbrian castles, saintly Ways and long distance footpaths. In passing, Wilson discusses knitting miners and the Geordie language, Ted Hughes and the Venerable Bede, bogs, plagues and George I - and much more.

NOTE RE MICKLE FELL AND WARCOP FIRING RANGE
The route over Mickle Fell from the Pennine Way to the B6276 crosses the MOD's Warcop Firing Range. There is no public right of way or right of access. This is a very active artillery range with the possibility of unexploded ordnance being encountered. For this reason access is strictly controlled by the MoD who should be consulted before walking across this land. Allow plenty of time to get a response!!! It is possible that access will be refused to much of the area. It is believed that there is a single approved route to the summit of Mickle Fell from the B6276 which may be used on non-firing days subject to permission being obtained in advance, and requires walkers to check in upon arrival and out upon departure. The author of the route encourages walkers to be flexible in their choice of routes throughout the whole walk, so advantage can be taken of this flexibility by legitimately finding an alternative route to reach the B6276. The author's only "rules" for completion are to stick to high ground where possible and to climb all the listed northern County Tops (of which Mickle Fell is one).
