St Aelred's Way

N Yorkshire, Northumberland, Borders

277 km / 172 miles
St Aeldred's Way passes through places associated with St Aeldred who was Abbot of Rievaulx Abbey from 1147 - 1167.

The route starts in Helmsley and passes through the North York Moors National Park and Farndale to reach Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees. The Roman and medieval town of Sedgefield is visited before reaching Durham Cathedral. After passing through Consett the Way heads to Hexham, the birthplace of St Aelred, with its medieval abbey. Remote parts of Northumberland National Park are crossed to reach Hadrian's Wall where the Pennine Way is joined through the Cheviot Hills to reach Chew Green, a site of Roman military camps. Here the route picks up the Roman road of Dere Street which is followed towards Jedburgh and St Boswells. The final section uses the Borders Abbeys Way to reach Melrose Abbey, the daughter house of Rievaulx Abbey.
