It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of Hazel Bound, a much-loved and longstanding volunteer with the Cornwall and Devon group of the Long Distance Walkers Association.
For more than 30 years, Hazel was at the heart of the Cornwall and Devon checkpoint on the annual LDWA 100 flagship event. Over those decades, she helped welcome literally thousands of tired walkers with warmth, humour, encouragement and generosity. The Cornwall and Devon checkpoint was known for the quality of its food and support, and much of that reflected Hazel’s cheerful enthusiasm, quiet organisation and ability to bring together a large team of volunteers, however far they had to travel.
For many participants, arriving at Hazel’s checkpoint was one of the highlights of the event. Weary legs were revived, spirits lifted and walkers invariably left with renewed energy and a smile on their face. Hazel understood exactly what tired walkers needed, whether that was food, practical support, reassurance or simply the kindness of someone who knew what the 100 meant.
Hazel also played a key role in organising several memorable LDWA 100 events, including the 1994 Dartmoor 100, the 2008 Exmoor 100 and the 2013 Camel Teign “Ivor’s Dream” 100.
Together with Terry, Hazel was also a driving force behind many other Cornwall and Devon events, including the Chagford Challenge. Her contribution went far beyond one weekend each year. She gave her time, energy and good humour to the group for decades, helping to create the welcoming and supportive atmosphere for which Cornwall and Devon events became so well known.
In recognition of her outstanding service to long-distance walking, Hazel was awarded the British Empire Medal, an honour richly deserved after countless years of tireless volunteering and support for the walking community.
But beyond her achievements, Hazel will be remembered for the person she was which was utterly selfless, endlessly kind, quietly mischievous and always ready to help others. Her cheerful enthusiasm and hard work were an inspiration not only to her own group, but to everyone who met her. Many people only saw Hazel at 100s and AGMs, but she always greeted friends with a smile and a hug, making even occasional meetings feel warm and familiar.
Hazel was truly one of a kind. Her loss will be deeply felt across the LDWA and especially among the generations of walkers whose journeys she helped make just that little bit easier.
